Pancyprians Advance to USASA Regional Final After 3-2 Win Over Lansdowne
The New York Pancyprian Freedoms are writing one of the most powerful chapters in their 50-year history. In a dramatic 3-2 win over Lansdowne Yonkers FC in the USASA Region 1 Amateur Cup Semifinal, the Freedoms proved once again that they are built for the biggest moments.
Down but never out, the team stormed back in the second half with two goals from striker James Thristino, leveling the match with relentless composure. In the 81st minute, Gonzalo Gil de Pareja slotted home the game-winner—securing the team’s place in the Eastern Regional Final, which will be held June 14–15 in Philadelphia.
This semifinal win comes just weeks after the team clinched the APSL Metropolitan Conference Championship, continuing an exceptional season that already includes a 2024 USASA Open Amateur Cup national title.
“The 2024–2025 season is shaping up to be very memorable,” said Philip Christopher, President of the New York Pancyprian Freedoms. “After winning the USASA 2024 USA Open Amateur Cup, the team won the APSL Metro Conference championship and advanced to the Eastern Regional finals for the USASA Open Amateur Cup. Our 50-year history is a journey full of victories. The 2024–2025 season could prove to be one of the best!”
Next up, the Freedoms face Manhattan Celtics F.C. in the APSL Champions Playoffs on Sunday, June 1, 2025, with a 6:00 PM kickoff at Queens College. It’s another chance for the team to showcase their depth, discipline, and championship mentality as they aim to secure a second major trophy this season.
A Season with Deeper Meaning
This campaign carries added weight, as the Freedoms have dedicated the season and their national championship victory to the people of Cyprus, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion. The club also honors the legacy of the late Constantinos (Dino) Iordanou, a former player and beloved benefactor whose passion for the game and for Cyprus lives on in every match.
As the Freedoms push forward on both the regional and national stages, one thing is clear—this team isn’t just playing for trophies. They’re playing for history.
